Family Session ~ Prep Guide

Updated: Mar 1

"Welcome to Kapture This Photography! I'm thrilled you've booked your session, and I'm excited to work with you and your family. To ensure we capture stunning photos, I've put together this helpful guide to prepare you for our session. From wardrobe tips to getting everyone (yes, dads and kids too!) ready, I've got you covered. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I'm always here to help. Let's create some unforgettable memories together!"

Wardrobe: "What will we wear?"

The hardest question everyone asks themselves after booking a photo session is: "What will we wear?". I totally understand! And I'm here to help!

When you start styling your session, I suggest starting with Mom and then working out from there. Whether you want to purchase all new clothes, or you want to use that dress you love, it's a great place to start. You don't have to start with mom's outfit though. Just pick one item first. Then you can pull your colors and textures and build up from that starter piece. Another good starting point is to think of the colors in your home (these images will be on your walls after all) or maybe your favorite color, then go from there.

Things to keep in mind:

  • "Comfort is key! Ensure everyone wears clothing that allows for ease of movement, as we'll be exploring and playing during our session. opt for breathable, soft fabrics that won't cause discomfort or distractions – you want to enjoy this experience, not worry about scratchy tags or tight seams!"

  • accessorize it: hats, scarves, jewelry, blankets, headbands, suspenders, etc. All these things are a great way to add another layer of your style into your session.

textures & layers: Layers add texture and textures add interest. Denim, chunky knits, lace, cords, etc. I love the way a chunky cardigan looks. Or a denim shirt tied at the waist.

Harmonize your colors! Choose a palette that complements each other, and consider muted, earthy tones that add warmth and depth to your photos. Some stunning options include: - Soft yellows (like mustard) - Dusty pinks (like mauve) - Earthy browns and khakis - Rich blues (like navy or dark blue) - Mossy greens (like hunter green) - Deep reds and oranges These natural hues will create a cohesive, timeless look that lets your love and connection shine through."

  • Make it personal! This session is all about celebrating your unique family bond. Infuse your personalities, style, and spirit into every aspect, and let your authenticity shine through. This is your story, and I'm here to help you tell it!"

Things To Avoid:

  • Keep it simple! Avoid clothing with large logos or bold graphics, as they can detract from the real stars of the show: your lovely faces

  • neon colors: just say no to hot pink and lime green

Mix it up! While matching outfits can be adorable, they can also lack visual interest. To add depth and personality to your family photos, try combining different colors, patterns, textures, and styles. This thoughtful approach will create a unique, dynamic look that celebrates your individuality.

What to expect: "What will our session be like?"

My goal is to capture the essence of your family's current season – the laughter, adventures, and love that make your relationships unique. I'm not just looking for posed smiles; I want to freeze genuine moments in time. Our session will be an adventure! We'll play, snuggle, explore, and maybe even get a little messy. We'll start with a few posed photos to get that perfect "Christmas Card" shot, but then we'll let our hair down and have some fun. Think about what makes your family special – the little games you play, the traditions you cherish, or the quirky habits that make you laugh. I want to capture these authentic moments and turn them into timeless memories. Here's what you can expect from our session: - We'll start about an hour before sunset and wrap up within an hour or so. - I'll have some stunning locations in mind, but feel free to suggest your own special spot. - If you have a meaningful location in mind, I'd love to hear about it! Incorporating personal touches makes your session truly unique.

The week before:

"How do I prep everyone for our photo session?"

Get the Kids Excited! In the week or two leading up to our session, casually mention me ( 'Victoria' or 'the photographer lady' work just fine!) in conversation with your little ones. Share the excitement of our upcoming adventure together! To make the experience even more enjoyable, consider bribery (I won't judge!). A post-session ice cream treat is always a winner! Most importantly, reassure your kids that our time together will be all about having fun! If they feel pressured to behave perfectly, it can show in the photos. My goal is to connect with them, put them at ease, and capture those genuine, joyful moments that make life so precious.

"How do I prep Dad for our photo session?"

Don't forget to fill Dad in on the excitement! Let him know that he's a vital part of our adventure too! Reassure him that his only job is to relax, be himself, and shower his love on you and the kids. No pressure, no stress! He'll be amazing, and we'll capture some wonderful moments together."

"How do I prep myself?"

Take a deep breath and unwind! Treat yourself to some pre-session pampering – whether that's a hair refresh, nail touch-up, or simply some quiet time. Remember, this experience is all about embracing your authentic self & enjoying quality time with your loved ones. Don't stress about the details; just show up, be you and soak up the joy of this special moment with your beautiful family.

Need help? Just ask:

I'm here to support you every step of the way! Whether you need help with wardrobe choices, deciding on props (like your childs favorite lovey!), or just have questions, I'm all ears. Session day: " It's finally here!"

The wait is over, and your session day is finally here! We've carefully curated every detail – from the perfect timing and location to your thoughtful wardrobe choices. I'm thrilled to see everything come together, and I can feel your excitement too! Let's make some unforgettable memories today!"

  • Remember, the most important thing today is to have FUN! If you and your little ones are enjoying yourselves, it will radiate through every photo. So take a deep breath, relax, and soak up the love with your family. Let's capture the genuine laughter, snuggles, and memories that make life truly special

  • Today is all about celebrating what makes your family special! We'll start with some relaxed getting-to-know-you time, and then capture those classic "Christmas Card" moments where everyone's smiling and looking their best. Once we've got those timeless shots, we'll break free from the formalities and focus on capturing the authentic, everyday moments that make your family's story truly unique."

  • Once we've checked off the posed photos, feel free to forget about the camera! You're welcome to glance over, but it's not necessary. From here on out, we're focusing on capturing genuine moments, laughter, and love – not forced smiles or perfect poses

  • Remember to stay connected with your loved ones throughout our time together. Whether it's a warm hug, a snuggle, or a gentle hand on the shoulder, physical touch speaks volumes about your love and connection. By maintaining contact with each other, we'll capture photos that exude warmth, affection, and togetherness – the true essence of family.

  • If your little ones are feeling nervous or extra energetic, don't worry – it's all good! I celebrate kids being their authentic selves, quirks and all. We're here to capture real moments, not perfect poses. So, shy ones can snuggle up, and wild ones can run free. This is about embracing your family's unique spirit, just as you are, in this season of life.

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone, consider packing: - Snacks and water to keep energy levels up - A cozy blanket for cuddles and relaxation - Jackets or cardigans for chilly weather - Extra snacks and water (because you can never have too many!) - A change of clothes for each family member (just in case!) Being prepared will help us focus on capturing special moments, rather than worrying about the basics."

  • Have fun and don't stress!
